POPSUGAR Must Have Box: April 2014

The POPSUGAR Must Have Box is a monthly service that sends subscribers a box of “hand-selected items in beauty, fashion, home, fitness, and food.” Each box is a curation of the current obsessions, or must haves, of Lisa Sugar, creator of POPSUGAR, and other POPSUGAR editors. At $39.95 a month, this subscription is on the pricier end, but POPSUGAR guarantees that boxes will have a product value of $100+. I’m writing this review with mixed feelings, because this is my first and last box. After seeing the curation of the April 2014 box, and looking more critically at past boxes, I have determined that I am a picky person, and want to spend my $40 on products I know I will love. I’m pretty sure I have an old granny soul, and that these products are meant to appeal to young people souls. ANNNYYYWAAYYY… the box:

My first POPSUGAR Must Have Box!

Check out that POPSUGAR pink!

First looks!

Two printed cotton flour sack tea towels- Value $19.50. Front and Center you see a set of two hand printed flour sack tea towels. These come from an Etsy shop called Fresh Pastry Stand. One says “Totally” printed in blue, and the other towel says “Awesome” printed in green. (See below for full views of the towels). I peeked at these towels ahead of time and knew I didn’t care for them. I’m gifting these to a younger, more hip friend. Oddly enough, I like almost every item in the Etsy seller’s shop. She has ton’s of cool, vintage inspired items. Unfortunately, the items we received were inspired by the wrong decade, the 80’s instead of the 50’s. Sigh. Lame.

(not) Awesome

Blue Avocado (Eco) Shopper Collapsible Tote Bag- Value $24.99. This is the niftiest little bag! I’m totally in love with it, and have been using it to cut down on plastic bag waste! At first, I wasn’t sure about the print, (“Ivory Roses”) but who the heck cares? It works! This guy lives in my purse, always at the ready! (See below for manufacturer pics.)

The bag folded up and zipped.

Expanded, the (Eco) Shopper is pretty huge at 18″ by 6″ by 14.5″. It can carry up to 20 lbs. Did I mention that this bag is made in part from recycled water bottles? I know. Right now you are saying this bag couldn’t be cooler. Wrong. One percent of bag profits goes to fund ocean research and conservation.

Gigi New York- Leather (?) Notebook- Value? (I can’t find this exact item anywhere online). I’m super disappointed in this item. I read spoilers ahead of time that referred to this item as a leather notebook. I imagined something more along the lines of the journal in the image below, a buttery soft leather book with thick, crafted paper. This journal is nothing like what I had hoped. The construction is cheap and doesn’t open flat. Also, I really loathe the “Run The World” phrase on the front. (I’m weird about labels and phrases on things I own. I do not purchase style items with logos, words, branding, etc.) Needless to say, this will be passed on. Meh.

I was robbed of the delicious little number in the bottom center. (Is that a little dramatic? Maybe. Such is my love for fine paper products!)

Rosewater Driftwood Handsoap- Value $10.50. I LOVVVEEE this hand soap. I’m in a love affair with Caldrea, and this soap brought us even closer together. I lack the scent vocab to describe this soap as anything but very good, but I assure you it smells very good. 🙂 This soap isn’t drying, and is phthalate, paraben, and dye free. LOVE. (You should know that right now I’m sitting on the couch, sniffing my freshly washed hands.) I think this may be my favorite item in the box. That’s weird, right?

Too Faced Natural Eye Neutral Eye Shadow Collection- Value- $36. I am SO happy to have this item. Because I wear glasses, I don’t usually invest in good eyeshadow, but I’m really happy to have this set!

These colors are perfect! There is enough color and finish variety to create many different looks. The eye colors are long lasting and beautiful.

This snack mix was made by the makers of Nature Box, a snack subscription service, just for POPSUGAR! It contains almonds, soybeans, corn, and cranberries. Celeste says this mix is horrible and bland. Richie thinks the mix is the greatest thing ever created. I guess I live somewhere in between.

I’m not going to subscribe to anymore style subscriptions unless I’m VERY confident that I share the curator’s aesthetic. I may consider the Nina Garcia Quarterly subscription. (Read more about the Nina Garcia subscription according to Liz Cadman at mysubscriptionaddiction.com here.) What did you think of the April 2014 POPSUGAR Must Have Box? Do you subscribe to the box? What do you think of the subscription?
